139. 동사와 함께 쓰이는 up / down

- up vs down

put ... up / 벽 등에 걸다, 올리다

  • I put some pictures up on the wall.

pick ... up / 줍다

  • There was a coin on the floor. I picked it up and looked at it.

stand up / 일어서다

  • Daewon stood up and walked out.

turn ... up / 소리 등을 높이다

  • I can't hear the TV. Can you turn it up a little?

take ... down / ( 벽 등에서 ) 내리다

  • I didn't like the picture, so I took it down from the wall.

put ... down / 내려놓다

  • I stopped writing and put down my pen.

sit down, bend down, lie down / 앉다, 굽히다, 눕다

  • I bent down to tie my shoes.

turn ... down / 소리 등을 낮추다

  • The oven is too hot. Turn it down to 325 degrees.

- tear down / cut down 등

tear down a building ( 건물을 ) 부수다 / cut down a tree ( 나무를 ) 베다 / blow something down ( 바람이 불어 ) 넘어뜨리다

  • Some old house torn down to make room for the new shopping mall.
  • A: Why did you cut down the tree in your yard?
    B: I didn't. It was blown down in the storm last week.

burn down 불에 타서 무너져내리다

  • They were able to put out the fire before the house burned down.

- down = 줄어드는, 내려가는

slow down / 속도를 줄이다

  • You're driving too fast. Slow down.

calm somebody down / 진정하다, 진정시키다

  • Calm down. There's no point in getting mad.

cut down ( on something ) / 줄이다 ( 음식 등의 양을 )

  • I'm trying to cut down on coffee. I drink too much of it.

- 기타 동사 + down

break down / ( 기계, 차 등이 ) 고장나다 or ( 토의, 회당 등이 ) 결렬될 때도 사용

  • The car broke down and I had to call for help.
  • Talks between the two groups broke down without a solution being reached. ( = the talks failed )

close down / 사업을 접다, 문을 닫다

  • There used to be a shop on this street, it closed down a few years ago.

let somebody down / 실망시키다

  • You can always rely on Daewon. He'll never let you down.

turn somebody / something down ( 지원 / 제안 등을 ) 거절하다

  • I applied for several jobs, but I was turned down for all of them.
  • My mom was offered the job, but she decided to turn it down.

write ... down / 적다, 메모하다

  • I can't remember Jungwook's address. I wrote it down, but I can't find it.
